African Methodist Episcopalian Church (AME):
Established by several African Americans from Philadelphia in 1816 when the church broke away from the white Methodist Church. The AME and its leaders were one of the groups that showed how the Declaration of Independence and the principles of Christian thought were contradictory to the institution of slavery.
