Barthe, Richmond:
(1901-1989) African sculptor who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and worked in New York City by getting the Rosenwald Fellowship. Barthe is known for his African, Caribbean, and African American free standing and portrait busts. He is the first African American sculptor to have work in a major American museum collection (Whitney Museum of American Art). Barthe’s work can also be found in Frank Lloyd Wright’s, Falling Water.
