Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was made up of 5 laws that were meant to balance the free states with the slave states. This included making California a free state, Texas was awarded financial compensation for land that was now considered New Mexico, New Mexico did not have any laws banning slavery, the slave trade was banned in Washington DC, and harsh fugitive laws were put in place saying that any runaway slave would be returned to their owner.
