Harriet Tubman

Archibald Motley Jr, "Mending Socks" oil on canvas, 1924.Motley, Archibald:

(1891-1981) African American painter active during the Harlem Renaissance, Motley studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in realism, portraits, landscape, and genre painting. He was best known for his realistic portraits of, mulatto women in particular.

Other subjects included souther life of working African Americans. Motley grew up in the south and was interested in biology and how it related to race.

Motley lived briefly in Paris after winning the Guggenheim Award.
