Horace Pippin, "John Brown Going to his hanging" oil on canvas, 1942.Pippin, Horace:

(1888-1946) An African American artists living in Pennsylvania, Pippen painted folk narratives of stories from the Bible, history, and landscapes. Although he painting arm was injured in WWI he was exhibited at the "Masters of Popular Painting" at the Museum of Modern Art in 1938. He was exhibited his work at a number of shows and exhibitions and was called the "first important negro painter to appear on the American scene" by Albert C. Barnes.
