Music Staff: The wooden planks represent the remembered in the memorial. The spacing chosen between spaces with planks and spaces without were chosen based on the rhythmic patterns of specific songs originating during the slavery movement...in this case, "Amazing Grace."

Wooden planks were chosen to represent the remembered in order to allow for a material change in the memorial's rhythmic patterns as it is exposed to the elements. Each space represents 100 of the remembered in order to account for all 645,000 that were brought over on the Middle Passage. On the interior of the memorial, the spaces without the planks will be utilized as spaces for reflection on moments of victory.

As time takes its affect on the memorial, this design was chosen to incorporate a shift in the material properties of the wall in order to accommodate this change. As the wood dematerializes over time, the oxidation of the steel in those locations will allow for a new rhythmic appearance will be available.
