Russworm, John:
(1799-1851)
Along with Samuel Cornish, Russworm established The Freedom's Journal, in 1827, the first African American newspaper that was dedicated to anti-slavery cause. Russworm was born in Jamaica as a slave but was moved to the United States while growing up. Eventually he ended up in New York City, where he started the Freedom's Journal.
Russworm also played a large role in the American Colonization Society that created a colony in Liberia to move African Americans back to Africa. He became a part of the leaders of the colony and even started another newspaper there. He lived in Liberia until his death in 1851.
