(1859-1937) A genre subject painter of African American descent, Tanner spent much of his life in France studying and painting, although he did study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Some of his paintings depicted biblical stories while others were showed African American life, a topic that was not painted often during his time.
